I just couldn't resist - Sanjaya's American Idol

I actually watched American Idol last night, just a little bit, but enough to see Blake Lewis perform Bon Jovi's "You give love a bad Name" and Jordin Sparks sing Martina McBride's "Broken Wings".

I'm not a huge fan of Blake's beat boxing but the audience just loves it. Blake is a weak singer. The only thing missing from Jordin's "Broken Wings" performance was the dress she wore the first time she sang the song, otherwise she did a really great job, keep in mind that I'm not a fan of hers. In the end who should win? Jordin probably.

Did you notice that I mentioned Sanjaya in the title? Well, as a former Fanjaya ,I just had to find an excuse to write about him shouldn't I? Wanting to read what others had to say about last night's show, I did a Google search for "American Idol" -without the quotes - the first result was the Official Fox Site for American Idol and the second one was... the Official-Fox-Site-American-Idol-Sanjaya-Malakar Contestant page! Will this season be remembered as the year when America discovered Jordin Sparks' voice, Blake Lewis' beat boxing or Sanjaya Malakar's hair?

Bye Sanjaya

Millions of Americans (and one Englishman) finally saw their prayers answered last night when Sanjaya Malakar was sent home.

I was reading articles on American idol and it seemed that most bloggers just didn't believe it could happen. As if Sanjaya had this mystical force (or conspiracy) keeping him in the show no matter how bad he performed. The truth is, you could tell that Sanjaya's performance on Country Music Night was far worse than his two previous ones.

If people vote for contestants based on the quality performances than it's logical that Sanjaya's last performance got him fewer votes than his previous ones. Believe it or not, there were praises all over the internet for Sanjaya's Latin Night performance, even the judges didn't hate it. After Country Night I don't think even his die hard fans could say they enjoyed his performance because it was not enjoyable, even his hair didn't look nice that night, so basically he didn't have much working for him except maybe for his smile. Believe it or not most people who voted for Sanjaya did so because they actually enjoyed his performances.

But don't say I did not warn you. I had not doubt that Sanjaya was the one leaving. I was surprised tough to see Chris Richardson escaping the bottom three. I guess Chris has a really big fan base. I didn't think his last performance was bad but the judges didn't give him a chance they were pushing him out the door (since like many people they didn't believe that Sanjaya would be going home any time soon).

Country Night - Will Sanjaya be sent home?

The contestants are supposed to sing country songs - I think -. Martina McBride is here to guide them and give them advice.

  • Phil Stacey - (Keith Urban's "Where the Blacktop Ends")

Phil sang first but guess what I missed his performance but my mom told me he was really great plus the judges praised him. After Stephanie Edwards was eliminated Phil became my favorite remaining contestant, he's on the right track and hopefully he will escape the bottom three tonight.

  • Jordin Sparks - (Martina McBride's "A Broken Wing")
Jordin looked radiant last night I just wish she keeps on making sound wardrobe choices in the remaining weeks, the makeup was nice too, a totally good look! Remember, I'm not a Jordin fan but I have to admit that she did a really good job. No other contestant outshined her last night, not even Melinda -she reminds me of Katherine McPhee...- I still have a little problem with Jordin, she's the only contestant I actually 'hear' breathing when she sings. I know that she has to breath but does she have to do it so heavily?

  • Sanjay Malakar - (Bonnie Raitt's "Something to Talk About")

Sanjaya had to sing right after Jordin. Until last night I wouldn't have mind being called a Fanjaya but... it was the best performance of the night followed by the worst. Sanjaya sang "something to talk about", his hairdo and his outfit were two things to talk about neither one looked good on him. It's the worst Sanjaya performance I've seen so far. It was a really bad song choice for his 'type' of voice, it's the type of song you sing with a strong voice unless you change it into something smoother... but I digress. Now I know why so many people hate Sanjaya so much.... he can be really awful as far as the singing is concerned oh well maybe it was just time for him to say goodbye.

  • Lakisha Jones - (Carrie Underwood's "Jesus Take the Wheel")
The boots excepted, Lakisha's outfit was really nice last night, even her hair - which I usually don't like - was nice. She chose a beautiful song, and she sang it with more than her voice, just beautiful. The judges didn't like it though but that's their problem! Lakisha will be safe tonight.

  • Chris Richardson - (Rascal Flatt's "Mayberry")

Chris delivered an OK performance. I think he sang nicely, it was not excellent but it was OK. The judges did not like it and Chris felt the weight of they negative criticism very heavily and that's always bad... you don't see Sanjaya do that do you? ...

  • Melinda Doolittle - ("Trouble is a Woman" by Julie Reeves)
Melinda tried to look younger last night, she actually looked dressed down for the occasion. So far her [ugly] outfits never kept her from delivering high quality performances. She's a professional, nobody is expecting any less from her. Last night was one of those nights when the judges had only praises for Melinda.

  • Blake Lewis - ("When the Stars Go Blue" by Tim McGraw)
Finally it was Blake's turn. I still don't understand why so many people like Blake. Is it the blond hair? His hairdo? Must be the clothes... Week after week after week Blake remains the same, it's almost as if he's singing the same song over and over again. The judges loved his performance so I guess he's safe tonight.

My bottom three prediction for tonight is Sanjaya, Chris and Blake (or Lakisha). I added Blake because his performance did not impress me but if America is influenced by the judges than Lakisha will be there instead. But the event of the night will be Sanjaya going home, saying goodbye being 'the' American Idol contestant everybody's talking about. We will miss your hair... I mean , we will miss you...

Latin Night....

It was Latin Night on American Idol. Muy Caliente! Yeah right you wish. It was not the most enjoyable American Idol night so far and that's the least I can say.

  • Melinda Doolittle - "Sway"
Melinda delivered a so-so performance. Simon didn't like it, he finally found a reason to criticize her! For once I think her dress was nice. I think the makeup artists did a lousy job, her face looked like they covered it with baby powder and her eyelids.... I still think she's safe because in spite of her unspectacular performance she did prove once again that she's a very good singer.
  • Lakisha Jones - "Conga"

Lakisha has a good, powerful voice but her make up was so scary. He lips were so red and glossy that they looked almost like they were bleeding or falling off her face. And what a poor song choice for her! The song says 'Come on shake you body baby do that Conga'. Not only she can't do the Conga, but she can even less pronounce it! Her hair was really ugly! [was that a wig?] and her dress.... totally unflattering to her figure. She chose a supposedly safe song that's more less soul and more animated than what she usually does but what was she thinking! I actually think that the song choice was really risky for her and her performance was completely uninspired, only Randy liked it. Could she be going home tonight?
  • Chris Richardson - "Smooth"
Chris sang Smooth...(I just love that song...). A very good song choice, there isn't much you need to do to make this song sound good. He sang it well enough and did his little show as usual with the moves etc... the judges liked it I'm sure the viewers did too.

  • Haley Scarnato - "Turn the Beat Around"
The judges (Paula excepted) just want to see Haley go home. Simon put her down in the worst way possible.[he says she's trying to stay in the competition by wearing as little clothes as possible to compensate her lack of vocal talent.... he's not completely wrong...] I think that Simon was disrespectful to her basically saying she's just selling her body to get the votes. The fact is Haley is using her "sex-appeal" to get votes but maybe that's how she dresses in her everyday life???
Anyway, performance wise, her voice was too low. She chose a dance song that's more appropriate for clubs, the kind of song you dance too without paying too much attention to the lyrics. And those wheels were so high... she was tiptoeing, she didn't look like she was easily moving. Haley is definitely not a strong singer. I appreciated the fact that she stayed cool even after the judges severely criticized her, she didn't completely stress or and start to sweat nervously, that's something neither Lakisha nor Phil can do (neither could Stephanie).

  • Phil Stacey - "Maria, Maria"
Phil is my favorite contestant at this point in the show. He's voice was good enough, not spectacularly good but good enough. I think he's performance was good last night even though his last notes were disastrous for the less. The fake Carlos Santana playing the guitar was quite awful though, I hope the real Carlos Santana was not watching this show...
But Phil really needs the moves, he should take some pointers from Blake, Chris or Sanjaya or anyone of the ladies. I really enjoyed Phil's performance but the judges... Randy seems to really hate Phil and wants to see him go home as soon as possible and Simon dislikes him.
  • Jordin Sparks "Rhythm is Gonna Get You"
Jordin has good vocal skills, there's no doubt about that but she can't dress...[have I said that before?]. Her performance was good but among the judges, only Paula liked it. Jordin is definitely one of the best singers in this competition.

  • Blake Lewis - "I Need to Know"
I'm usually indifferent to Blake's performances but he was surprisingly good last night. And for once his outfit was not outrageous.
  • Sanjaya Malakar - "Besame Mucho"

And last but not least was Sanjaya. He started singing the chorus in Spanish and I was speechless, I did not know that he would sing the verses in English. Only Sanjaya could have such an idea. Sanjaya always makes good song choices, in that matter he does better than most contestants. He's also using his charms to the max. Last night, he looked a few years older trying to work gain the teen agers hearts and votes after winning those of pre-teens(?)[that's just a theory]. Nonetheless, I think he did a good job, I'm sure his fans were happy and he possibly won new ones. You really never know what you're getting from Sanjaya. I think he's safe once again. Despite all the bad comments on Sanjaya and the fact that people are always pointing out his lack of vocal talents, I think he is much better than Haley for instance, at least he seems to be making efforts to improve. He's voice is still not strong enough but I appreciate the fact that night after night he's not just relying on the fact that many people like him he explicitly says that he's trying to show the judges that he's a good singer at each performance. He's working hard at improving his vocal skills regularly, or at least that's the feeling I have when I hear his comments [so what if you call me a Fanjaya!].

I don't know why the heels have to be so high, maybe the girls are the one asking for them but I believe those extra high heels don't allow them to move easily...

Bottom three will be Lakisha, Haley and Phil. Who's going home? Bye bye Kisha!!! I really think she sucked but Haley could go too.

I just wanted to add that I wish American Idol had a Whitney Huston night....
